No picture today, just some thoughts and a little story. It is Memorial Day here in the USA. Yesterday, R and I watched a segment of the program in DC on TV. Someone played "Taps" on the trumpet, which brought back memories of a memorial day in the Netherlands, called ' doden herdenking' . It is on May 4th, and May 5th is then 'bevrijdings dag' because that is when all of the Netherlands was free of the German occupation at the end of WWII.
One May 4th, I was en route by bus from the town where R went to college to my own college city, Utrecht. When it was time for the two minutes silent contemplation at 8 pm, the bus driver turned of the radio and parked the bus on the side of the road. I was surprised but thankful that we could observe this ritual. Thank you, Mr. bus driver.
This many years later though, I still don't understand why we as people who hold human life so sacred, have not been able to come up with a better way to settle our differences and disputes-
