Boys and toys

Dus ik kwam gisteravond thuis na een lange dag vol met ups en down bij het kinderziekenhuis waar ik vrijwilligers werk doe- en vond mijn twee favoriete mannen in de achtertuin, druk bezig met een nieuw speeltje. Een heuze hoge druk spuit! Dat hadden we kennelijk echt nodig. Wat valt er dan zoal te hoge-druk-spuiten vraag je je af? Nou, bijvoorbeeld onze tuin tafel, die de hele winter geen aandacht had gehad en ook niet verdekt/bedekt was opgesteld, en dus bloot gesteld aan de elementen en vooral het element 'bos'. Glunderend bestraalden ze om de beurt de op z'n kant gekeerde plastic tafel, en nodigden mij uit om het ook te proberen :"je wilt dit ook doen, is leuk!" Goed, nou, het is inderdaad makkelijker dan zelf met de schrobber aan de slag, en uit ervaring weet ik dat het resultaat minder mooi is. Daarom leg ik er ook meestal een quilt overheen als we buiten zitten.

So last night I came home from a long day filled with ups and downs at the children's hospital where i volunteer- and found my two favorite guys in the back yard playing with their latest toy that had just arrived. A real power washer! Which we apparently needed very much. Well, what ever for, you inquire? Well, for instance for our outside table, which had been neglected all winter and was left prone to the elements, specifically the element 'woods'. Broadly smiling, the guys were taking turns to wash the tilted plastic table, inviting me to "try it, you know you want to!". Indeed much easier than scrubbing with my own elbow grease, and definitely cleaner too- that's why I usually cover it up with a quilt when we sit outside.

Dus ik liet de heren hun lol en ging gauw met mijn eigen nieuwe speeltje aan de slag- een ninja chopper- om de groenten voor de pasta saus in twee seconden te hakken. Het voordeel van de ninja is, behalve dan dat het ding geweldig werkt, dat het allemaal ook in een ander favoriet speeltje kan, de afwas machine. Ik gebruik natuurlijk ook mijn aandeel in electronisch speelgoed...de naaimachine uiteraard en de wasmachine, de droger, de oven, de microwave etc etc. Maar omdat we hier alles op electrisch hebben, inclusief de waterpomp (geen wc doortrekken geen douche, geen water uit de kraan), kunnen we af en toe reflecteren over hoe afhankelijk we zijn van die stroom, namenlijk als het hier uitvalt- iets dat hier nog wel eens gebeurt in de US.

So I left the men to their fun and went to work with my own new toy, a ninja chopper, to chop the veggies for the pasta sauce in two seconds flat. Besides chopping like nothing else, the ninja parts can be cleaned in yet another favorite toy, the dishwasher. I certainly use my share of electronic toys- my sewing machine of course, the washing machine, the dryer, the oven/stove, the microwave, etc etc. But because our whole house has everything on electricity (no gas), including the water pump (so no flushing the toilet, no shower, no water from the faucet), we get a chance the reflect on our dependence every now and then during one of the usual power outages here in the US.

surprise! I bought this plant for a fundraiser and could not remember what I had ordered. It arrived as a small root (life plant) and so I just planted it to see what it would turn out to be.
